Fuego’s Tortilla Grill Restaurant voluntarily shut down today amid an investigation by the Brazos County Health Department into an outbreak of a food-borne illness.Health department officials said they started looking into a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium-Ohio serotype cases in September 2013 and have documented 30 cases with 26 being residents of Brazos County or having traveled through the countyNo deaths have been reported.“Through the course of the food borne outbreak investigation, Fuego’s Tortilla Grill Restaurant became of statistical significance,” according to a statement released by the health department Friday afternoon. “Environmental samples were obtained from the restaurant May 13. Today, the DSHS Laboratory reported that 4 of the 36 samples obtained from the restaurant tested positive for Ohio strain. A specific exposure source, such as food handling procedures, food supply or an infected employee has not been specifically identified, but is currently under investigationFuego’s General Manager David Girela said the restaurant will be closed for “deep cleaning” and will reopen no later than 11 a.m. Saturday

Among the changes implemented overnight will be the use of liquid eggs instead of whole, fresh eggs, which are believed to be the source of the food-borne illness, Girela said.
