Salmonella – Tainted Lettuce Recalled

River Ranch Fresh Foods of Salinas, Calif., issued a voluntary recall of romaine lettuce heads Nov. 4 as a precaution against salmonella contamination.

The bulk-packed, 24-count cartons bore the lot code 13816291, according to a news release by the California Department of Public Health.

The heads were distributed to 36 restaurant and foodservice clients in California, mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area. Six were in the Fresno, Calif., area. The product was also distributed in other states.

A random sample tested positive for salmonella by the New York State Health Department, according to a letter from Landover, Md.-based Keany Produce to clients who received the romaine heads. No illnesses have been reported.
