The Marler Blog is out today with Tomatoes Cause Salmonella Illnesses in New Mexico and Other States.

Blamed are uncooked tomatoes that already have been found responsible for giving the strain known as Salmonella St. Paul to 31 people in seven New Mexico counties.  Those are Dona Ana, Socorro, Curry, McKinley, San Juan, Bernalillo and Sandoval.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, the bad tomatoes were sold by Wal-Mart in Las Cruces and Farmington, Lowe’s in Las Cruces, and Bashas’ in Crownpoint.   Other retail outlets in the area may also be selling them.  Health officials are working to pinpoint where the tomatoes with the bacteria are being grown.

Is it uncooked Tomatoes or tomatoes that was not washed? Is the bacteria living inside the Tomatoes?

Please check all of your Wal-marts. I purchased tomatoes from Wal-mart in this time frame and my whole family became ill. I was thinking we contracted a virus but now that I have read this blog I’m certain it was from the tomatoes I purchased.

I bought some vine ripe tomatoes from Fry’s in Phoenix and used them to make pico de gallo last week. My husband and I got a little sick, mostly nauseous and sore. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but salmonella sounds like some of the symptoms fit. I guess we’re lucky it takes a lot of lime juice when you make it. Maybe that helped a bit to keep most of the symptoms down. We’re going to the doctor’s tomorrow to get checked up.

Wow, that is crazy! I love tomatoes…;-(
By the way do you guys know that Salmonella has nothing to do with salmon… as it turns out, Salmonella is a bacteria that was named after an American veterinary surgeon whose name was Daniel E. Salmon.

We had a small salad, for the lighter side, one evening and knew that we were going straight to bed after eating salad only. I love tomatoes and loaded our salad with tomatoes we bought at Sam’s. Needless to say, we were so bloated, and had severe stomach cramps in the morning we felt like we had eaten poison. I could have the link to the bad tomoatoes sitting in my kitchen.
